Key takeaways
  • An event needs at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2.
  • An accessible portable toilet has a level entry with no step, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars, a seat at the right height, and a turning space inside.
  • We call our unit wheelchair-accessible because the manufacturer, PolyJohn, describes the Comfort XL as handicap-accessible rather than ADA-certified.
  • Place accessible units on firm, level ground connected to the main path, close to parking and seating, with the door clear of curbs, cables and gravel berms.

How many accessible portable toilets does an event need?

An event needs at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Round up, and plan at least 1 accessible unit in every cluster. A bank of 12 units needs 1 accessible unit. A bank of 30 needs 2.

What makes a portable toilet accessible?

An accessible portable toilet has a level entry with no step, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars, a seat at the right height, and a turning space inside. The 2010 ADA Standards call for a turning circle 60 inches in diameter, or a T-shaped turning space.

See §304 turning space and §603 toilet rooms.

Why don't we call our unit ADA-compliant?

We call our unit wheelchair-accessible because the manufacturer, PolyJohn, describes the Comfort XL as handicap-accessible rather than ADA-certified. Compliance also depends on the route, the pad slope and signage at your site, which are outside the unit itself.

Where should accessible units be placed?

Place accessible units on firm, level ground connected to the main path, close to parking and seating, with the door clear of curbs, cables and gravel berms. Avoid sand and soft grass. Restroom trailer steps block wheelchairs, so pair every trailer with an accessible unit.

Questions renters ask before they book

Our dispatchers hear these 4 questions often, including “I have a family member in a wheelchair. Can she use a standard unit?” and “Do you have one that's a little bigger, with room to change?” The answers are written the way we explain them on calls. Starting prices appear only here, and your itemized quote confirms the exact total.

I have a family member in a wheelchair. Can she use a standard unit?

No. A standard unit door is only about 24 inches wide. Rent a wheelchair-accessible unit. It has a ground-level floor, a wide door, grab rails and room for a 60-inch turning circle.

Do you have one that's a little bigger, with room to change?

Yes. The wheelchair-accessible unit has more than 16 square feet of floor space, so it works well as a roomy changing stall at pool parties and parent-friendly events.

Is it an upcharge to switch to a wheelchair-accessible unit?

Yes, a small one. A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $295 for an event and $295 per 28-day cycle on a jobsite. The unit is wider and heavier, so it takes more room on the truck.

What would you recommend for a large event of about 1,000 people?

For 1,000 guests over 4 hours, plan 20 standard units, plus 5 more if alcohol is served. At least 2 of those units should be wheelchair-accessible to meet the 5% rule for public events. Add 13 hand-wash stations if food is served.
