What is inside a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step, a door frame 32 inches wide, grab rails beside the seat and room to turn a wheelchair. The manufacturer calls the PolyJohn Comfort XL handicap-accessible. It does not claim ADA certification, so we do not call it ADA-compliant.

Is a wheelchair-accessible unit ADA-compliant?

A wheelchair-accessible unit is built for wheelchair users, but ADA compliance depends on the full setup, not just the unit. The 2010 ADA Standards also look at the route to the unit, the slope of the pad and signage. Accessible units need a 60-inch diameter turning circle or a T-shaped turning space inside.

  • Count: 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 says that where portable units are clustered, at least 5% of the units in each cluster must be accessible.
  • Turning space: §304.3 calls for a circle 60 inches in diameter (not radius), or a T-shaped space.
  • Route: place the unit on a firm, level pad that connects to a paved or firm path, with no curb or step.
  • Signage: accessible units carry the International Symbol of Accessibility.

This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm your requirement with the venue or permit office. Read our accessible unit guide.

How many accessible units does an event need?

An event needs at least 1 accessible unit in every cluster of portable toilets, and 5% of the units in that cluster, rounded up. 10 units need 1 accessible unit. 21 units need 2. Private parties have no legal minimum, but one accessible unit helps older guests and parents with small children.

Accessible unit count by cluster size (5% rounded up, minimum 1)
Units in the cluster5% of unitsAccessible units needed
1–200.05–1.01
21–401.05–2.02
41–602.05–3.03

Where should an accessible unit be placed?

Place an accessible unit on the firmest, flattest spot nearest the event path, such as a parking lot, slab or packed caliche. Avoid sand, soft grass and slopes, because a wheelchair needs a stable route. The unit is 62 inches square, so it goes through a driveway, not a side gate.

Questions renters ask before they book

Our dispatchers hear these 6 questions often, including “I have a family member in a wheelchair. Can she use a standard unit?” and “Do you have one that's a little bigger, with room to change?” The answers are written the way we explain them on calls. Starting prices appear only here, and your itemized quote confirms the exact total.

I have a family member in a wheelchair. Can she use a standard unit?

No. A standard unit door is only about 24 inches wide. Rent a wheelchair-accessible unit. It has a ground-level floor, a wide door, grab rails and room for a 60-inch turning circle.

Do you have one that's a little bigger, with room to change?

Yes. The wheelchair-accessible unit has more than 16 square feet of floor space, so it works well as a roomy changing stall at pool parties and parent-friendly events.

Is it an upcharge to switch to a wheelchair-accessible unit?

Yes, a small one. A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $295 for an event and $295 per 28-day cycle on a jobsite. The unit is wider and heavier, so it takes more room on the truck.

What would you recommend for a large event of about 1,000 people?

For 1,000 guests over 4 hours, plan 20 standard units, plus 5 more if alcohol is served. At least 2 of those units should be wheelchair-accessible to meet the 5% rule for public events. Add 13 hand-wash stations if food is served.

Are there any rules about where it has to be placed?

Pick a flat, firm spot, such as gravel, packed dirt, concrete or short grass. Our service truck must park within about 50 feet. Keep the spot clear of power lines, sprinkler heads and parked cars. Units placed in a street or sidewalk may need a City of Odessa right-of-way permit.

Will it fit through my side gate?

A standard unit is 43.5 inches wide, so your gate needs at least a 48-inch clear opening plus room for two crew members. A wheelchair-accessible unit is 62 inches wide and usually goes through a driveway, not a side gate.
