How many porta potties do you need per guest?
You need 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event of up to 4 hours, 1 per 40 guests for 4 to 8 hours, and 1 per 30 guests beyond 8 hours. Round up every time. These guest-per-unit figures are the Zachary Rental Works planning method, based on what our dispatchers recommend on calls.
| Event length | Guests per standard unit | Example: 120 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 hours | 50 | 120 ÷ 50 = 2.4 → 3 units |
| 4 to 8 hours | 40 | 120 ÷ 40 = 3 units |
| Over 8 hours | 30 | 120 ÷ 30 = 4 units |
How many extra units does alcohol add?
Alcohol adds 1 unit for every 4 base units, with a minimum of 1 extra unit. If the table says 5 units, add 2 more because alcohol is served (5 ÷ 4 = 1.25, rounded up to 2). If the table says 3 units, add 1. Drinks shorten the time between trips, so lines grow fast.
How many hand-wash stations and accessible units do you need?
Add 1 hand-wash station for every 2 toilets when food is served. For public events, make at least 5% of the units in each cluster accessible, rounded up, with a minimum of 1. The 5% figure comes from the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. The sink ratio is our planning method.
What is a worked example for a wedding?
A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar needs 5 units. Step 1: 150 ÷ 40 = 3.75, round up to 4. Step 2: alcohol adds 1 (4 ÷ 4 = 1). That is 5 units. Step 3: food adds 3 hand-wash stations (5 ÷ 2 = 2.5, round up to 3). Make 1 of the 5 units wheelchair-accessible.
How many porta potties does a jobsite crew need?
A jobsite crew needs at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and 1 of each per 50 workers above 200, under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. With weekly service we recommend 1 unit per 10 workers. An 18-person crew needs 2 units.
Rule text: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. This is the legal minimum. Your general contractor or safety officer may require more.
Questions renters ask before they book
This section answers 5 questions in the words callers use. It starts with “How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?” and “What would you recommend for a large event of about 1,000 people?” Each answer gives the rule or number first, then the conditions that change it. Call (432) 239-8866 for anything not covered here.
How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?
For a 100-guest party of up to 4 hours, plan 2 standard units. If alcohol is served, add 1 unit, so 3 in total. Add a hand-wash station when food is served. Our calculator shows each step of the math.
What would you recommend for a large event of about 1,000 people?
For 1,000 guests over 4 hours, plan 20 standard units, plus 5 more if alcohol is served. At least 2 of those units should be wheelchair-accessible to meet the 5% rule for public events. Add 13 hand-wash stations if food is served.
How many porta potties does my crew need?
OSHA requires at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. Over 20 workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. We recommend 1 unit per 10 workers with weekly service, so tanks and paper last the full week.
Would we need it cleaned more than once a week?
Yes, if one unit serves more than 10 workers on a 40-hour week. Add a second weekly visit or a second unit. Odessa summers average 94°F highs in July, and heat speeds up odor, so busy summer sites often add a visit.
Do your porta potties have sinks in them?
Standard units have a hand sanitizer dispenser but no sink. Deluxe flushing units have a foot-pump sink inside. For a group, a separate 2-station or 4-station hand-wash sink is often the better buy because guests do not wait inside the stall to wash.
